I call this breadFarmhouse Apple Walnut Loaf because it’s every bit homemade, made with fresh apples from the local market, adorned with rich buttery walnut chunks, infused with some fragrant cinnamon spice and baked to a heavenly golden brown and it is deliciously yummy. *Wahooo!*
With that said, I’m infatuated with making quick breads. Especially in the fall.Everyone I know loves to eat them, receive them, bake them and freeze them for later. They’re great for bake sales, breakfast, snacking and even dessert, right?
Ingredients You’ll Need
Farmhouse Apple Walnut Loaf Recipe
- applesauce – reduce sugar if not using unsweetened applesauce
- olive oil
- sugar
- eggs
- all-purpose flour
- ground cinnamon
- baking soda
- salt
- walnuts, coarsely chopped, & extra for top of bread
- Granny Smith apples, peeled and chunked, can also use fuji or gala apples
Instructions How to Make FarmhouseApple Walnut Loaf
- Preheatoven350° Fahrenheit. Spray a 9×5loaf panwith non-stick spray and line with parchment paper to remove loafcakeeasily when it’s cooled. (Or you can lightly grease andflour)
- In alarge bowl, usingmixer, beatwet ingredientsof applesauce, oil and sugar for up to a minute, then addeggs, one at a time, beating well after each one.
- In aseparate bowl, sift orwhisktogetherdry ingredientsofflour,cinnamon,bakingsodaandsalttogether and add into the wetmixtureand mix together well, not overmixing.
- Add chopped walnuts andapplesmix together.
- Pourbatterintoloaf panandbake60-70 mins – use thetoothpicktest to make sure it’s cooked. (Cakeneeds to spring back on middle top, not be spongy or it won’t be done, so it might take an extra 5 mins, depending onoventemp)
- Removeloaf panfromovenand let cool.

Quick Bread Tips
- Don’t overmix the batter – this causes the bread to be tough or dense.
- If using sweetened applesauce, reduce the sugar in the recipe down some.
- Make sure you don’t slice the apples into large chunks, so they cook through.
- Make sure you bake the bread through, otherwise the bread will be gooey and raw. You will know the bread is done baking when you touch the top of the bread and doesn’t feel soft or jiggly in the center. Also, you can insert a toothpick in the bread, and it should come out clean, without any gooey batter attached.
How Healthy is This Farmhouse Apple Walnut Loaf?
- It doesn’t have a ton of sugar in it, ok!! It has 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce, 1 cup of sugar, 2 cups of flour, 1/3 cup of olive oil, & 2 eggs as the base, so it’s pretty healthy overall. No butter-because we’re loving the olive oil!
- Variations: You could change the flour up for gluten free or whole wheat, or change up the olive oil for the coconut oil or canola oil or change up the 2 eggs for mashed bananas. You could also switch out the sugar for a sugar-free option like Lakanto or something similar. Of course, the textures may vary some, but you can always look up substitutes here if you want to find other substitutes for your liking for this recipe and others.
More Variations
- We used walnuts for some crunchy texture, but you can also sub with pecans or any nuts you prefer! You can also leave nuts out as well.
- Add some shredded coconut for a delicious twist on the apple bread! Give it a tropical vibe!
- Love chocolate in your quick breads? Add a handful or two of some chocolate chips or chocolate chunks!

Using mixer, beat applesauce oil and sugar for up to a minute, then add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each one.
Sift together flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt together and add into the wet mixture and mix together well, not overmixing.
Add walnuts and apples mix together.
Pour batter into loaf pan and bake 60-70 mins – use the toothpick test to make sure it’s cooked. (Cake needs to spring back on middle top, not be spongy or it won’t be done, so it might take an extra 5 mins, depending on oven temp)
Remove loaf pan from oven and let cool.
