Yesterday I posted about the need for greater local #transportation options for #peoplewithdisabilities. Today, I read in Able News about a related need in New York City. Officials there have not followed through fully on longstanding promises to increase the availability of the taxis and ride shares that can accommodate people in wheelchairs.According to Jim Weisman, a leader at the United Spinal Association, New York City is one of the few U.S. cities where people in wheelchairs can easily get rides from an airport or train station"If you travel to other major cities in a wheelchair, it is almost impossible to travel like everyone else, even after days of planning. But there is more work to be done in NYC," he said.

#Transportation is another major need of #peoplewithdisabilities. Here’s a great example highlighting the need as well as the #selfadvocacy that can be used to pursue change. Stephanie Speaker, who has a disability, invited an elected rep to work with her on expanding #paratransit in New York State to better help people to reach more destinations in their communities.

The food industry is providing much-needed opportunities for #jobtraining and #employment for #peoplewithdisabilities. People with developmental and intellectual disabilities have proven themselves to be hard-working and loyal employees as they make and sell popcorn and baked goods and work with customers in restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops around the country. We need to develop many more employment opportunities in various industries to meet the need for people in this population to achieve to full potential. https://lnkd.in/e3QMYgT2

Today on #RareDiseaseDay, I honor rare disease patients of all ages, their families, and their #caregivers. I have seen how dedicated and determined these people are even in the face of complicated and often disabling illnesses. They tell their personal stories publicly to help educate others. They raise money to support #patientadvocacy and education. They support one another through in-person support groups and online communities. They ask elected officials to vote for policies supporting medical research. Some volunteer to enter clinical trials, accepting the risk involved as part of their quest to help find treatments and cures. #CareAboutRare

Leading up to tomorrow's #RareDiseaseDay, remember that while these illnesses sound like they are on the fringes, they can happen to anyone. In my social and family circle, I know someone with a rare disease of the vascular system, someone with a rare disease effecting the connective tissues, and someone who has survived a cancer so rare that the Mayo Clinic sees about one case of it per year. And here's the kicker: After being treated for years for thyroid eye disease, I found out only in the last year that it's rare.#CareAboutRare
